Hey John,
I don't believe we've ever met. I retired from the music biz in '78. I was a drummer and percussionist with Zappa and Captain Beefheart. At any rate, believe it or not, I just recently heard your playing
on the David Lee Roth cut, "Just A Gigolo", recorded in 1985! I'm a big fan of the late great Louis Prima, so I was knocked out to hear your later version of his standard. What impressed me was your "time". In my later career I always prided myself on my attention to keeping a laid back solid groove; so when I heard your playing, it was obvious you are a member of the fellowship! If there was a click track used on that recording, you were definitely playing on the back of the "k"!! You can be sure
I'll be looking to hear more of you!
Very best regards,
Art Tripp |

John:
You probably won't remember me but I was a friend of your father back in the 60's. We talked on our Ham Radios once a week and we became good friends. In the 70's I got very busy traveling with my job and we go out of touch. I never forgot him and I googled his name and got you. I was very sorry to read that he and your sister and your mother had passed. I waited too long. We met in St Louis once for a very nice weekend and he and Judy visited us twice. The last time you and your sister came with him. I am attaching a picture of you and your sister taken with our dog on our front porch. I was very impressed reading about your accomplishments and I know your father was proud of you. I would like to know what year your father passed and if his wife Judy is still living.

JR: Great site!
Thanks for being such an inspiration to all of us who hold the groove. One of my biggest thrills
was to see my name along with yours and Jeff Porcaro's on a Glenn Medeiros CD back in the
late '80's.

I love your work on Robbie Robertson's Storyville....however, if i had to pick anything, it would be Change the World. Such a simple groove, yet it moves the song so well. i play that with a cover/main line party band, and it is such a hard song to keep in the pocket! By the way - the website looks awesome!!!

Hi John:
I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your sister Judy. I have many fond memories of our growing up together as kids. She had a strong spirit and I'm sure; fought a tough battle all the way to the end. As a friend and her classmate of Creston High School Class of '69, please accept our most sincere condolences.

Hi John,
Thought I'd look you up after I found my vinyl copy of Chaka Khan and Rufus - Stompin at the Savoy live LP. When I was 16 a bass player told I'd never be able to play like you, with that feel that makes you wanna dance or become a drummer! I'm 37 now and he was right you've got it totally. I've done some pretty big sessions myself with Simple Minds and sessions of that weight but I always look back to that live album as a height which I'm still striving to get to. Thanks John, I wish you lots of luck and happiness from a very inspired session guy from Glasgow, Scotland.
Cheers,

Hi JR,
Have listened to the soundbytes for the forthcoming TRW album and it's a winner ! Can't wait for the album to be released. I haven't been that excited for a new album in a long time ! Will spend a few days with Creatchy in Germany at the end of the month and also meet with Tommy Denander. Hope all is fine for you. All is good here. Political situation is stable and it seems that a positive issue is achievable.

You don't have an idea of what your work means to me... I'm a 28 year old drummer from
Hermosillo, México... I grow up listening music from lots of latinamerican singers where you were playing drums on that records, specially Luis Miguel, Roberto Carlos and Benny Ibarra... It was amazing for me listening your drumming, clean, sober.. it helped me to form my own style to play.. you and Jeff Porcaro were my masters... I don't have a word to thank you for that formation you
gave me... I'm actually eating from my drumming that I owe it to you and Jeff...
Thanks a million sir...

hi there from New Zealand.
As a young kid growing up in Fiji , I always read the credits on records that I bought and move
straight to who the drummer was. I saw your name alot of times and was always in awe of your style and talent. I am now 38 yrs old and after a life of wanting to learn the drums and always being too scared, I picked up the courage and have had started my lessons. I kick myself that I never did this earlier. Better late than never huh ??? I am always on the net looking for inspiration and encouragement and the thought that one day I will get it together and be happy with my style.
Dig your style and just wanted to post this.
have a great one :-)

Hey man,
I'm stoked that there's a JR Web site. Rules man. Some young guy at work was just singin', "All Night Long." I told him, "You know why you're singin' this song, right?" I Googled John Robinson to show him why. He's seen the light folks. Let me just say those Modern Drummer ads with John - totally awesome man, you can tell the guy's groovin' just from the photos. Somebody comes up
to me and asks, "What's it like to be a musician?" I'll hand them a photo of John. 6' 4" doesn't just mean basketball folks. It could also mean, 5 piece drum kit with some fresh beats hipness.

Dear John, (I always wanted to say that! :^)
Who was great-great-great-grandpappy Haney in the South? 'Cause I gotta tell ya, you got the groove. And Grandpa Haney's nose. Love and best wishes, your Cuz, Gale. p.s. Philly with Chaka Khan, big and beautiful in the lavender lace, was great. But your drumming clinic in Chicago was a highlight. Bang your head here . . .
Love, Gale
p.p.s. When are you going to get serious and play some blues?
Slow and low-down, like you mean it. With Chaka would be bonus.

Hey JR,
thanks for an awesome clinic in Vancouver. I was blown away to see how you gave people a chance
to be part of it. You gave me the opportunity to come up and jam with you and it was a huge thrill.
I want to thank you again for this. It was easy to see your love for drumming and that you really enjoyed being there despite your very busy schedule. I love the Funkshui CD. Although it's an
album spotlighting you, you still play for the music and take your parts when most musical. A big
hats off to all the players on this CD. Lot's of cool surprises too ("Telling lies" for one). The Montebelluna drum solo at the end of the listen is a lesson in groove and taste.
(Hard to believe that it's over 12 minutes).
Thanks again.

Hi John,
I'm a guitarist and I've always been a great admirer of your playing. I live in Wellington,
New Zealand and I caught your clinic in Auckland in October 2000. I can remember jumping
into a van with my brother Steve (who's also a drummer) and some of his students, and making
the eight hour journey to come and see you. It was so worth the trip. We were talking about it on
our way home. I'm currently studying at Berklee College of Music on the 5-week Summer Performance Program. I teach music back home and I'll never forget what you said at your
clinic about the importance of "the groove". When I teach my ensemble classes I always stress
the importance of maintaining solid grooves for any song we learn. Not just for the drummers,
but for everyone to keep that in mind and remember. Thanks for the lesson, the incredible
clinic in Auckland and the amazing playing throughout the years. All the best! Andy Mauafua :)

I am studying with Gary Chaffee and he has positively commented on you playing several times.
I have always been impressed with your musicality and taste, especially on the John Anderson
'City of Angels' recording. the pairing of you and Porcaro, is a must have for any musician.

Hey John,
I am a big fan man! I was wondering if you could give me any pointer's on what to do to gain proffessional recognition. You will probably never have time but if you do and don't mind check out my site Jo-Jomoceri.com and let me know what you think, my site is more on the fusion side with some pockit also. Keep up the amazing work man!!!

Dear fellow JR fans, Haven't those of you reading Modern Drummer been surprised that MD only printed a small review of "Funkshui" ? If, like me, you are surprised and disappointed, please politely write MD at rvh@moderndrummer.com to ask them to feature JR soonest. In order to make this "action" efficient and to not snow under Mr. Van Horn with emails, only MD readers/subscirbers should write. I think JR deserves the cover not only for everything he has done but for everything he is continuing to do for the drumming and music world.
Best regards.

Hi John, I don't think we have ever met but your father was my friend and optometrist for more than 40 years. He was an excellent optometrist and a very good man. I made appointments and drove about 250 miles to have him examine my eyes after we left the Creston area. He was great! He was an excellent optometrist and a very intelligent man, Your Dad was incredibly proud of you. Good luck with all you do!

Congratulations on all your success. Can't wait to hear your cd. Nice to see from the pictures that you have moved from tennis to golf, it's a lot easier on the knees. I'm in the Chicago area now - anytime you're up for some golf - let me know.

John,
Congratulations on being selected to the Iowa Rock N Roll Hall of Fame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I grew up down the street from you on Birch in Creston. When I was a young kid I wanted to play the drums. I joined the school band and they had too many drummers so I played the trumpet. I really did not like the trumpet but Mr. Bauman insisted that I continue. My dad Ken Drey knew you dad Jack and at one time was going to arrange for you to give me drum lessons!!!! Wow, if that had happened I am sure we would have hit it off!!!!!!!! You probably knew my brother Bruce. Any way, you are one of the
great people to come from Creston and we are all very proud of you John!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great website!!!!!!!!!!!! Be well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
I looked your site up because my dad is an old fan (from the begining) and talks about what incredible talent you have. We'll be listening to music and he'll say 'this is one of John's -
listen to that perfect rythm, etc...' I enjoyed visiting your site and hearing about what you've
been up to lately. Congratulations on the solo album, I can't wait to hear it.

Hi
my name is Joe. I'm 8 years old and I'm a drummer too. My mom's friend Lynn Foster listened to me jam today and told me I should email you. I have a charcoal colored drumset and I play it everyday. I'm gonna be in my talent show at school. I hope I can be a famous drummer like you someday. Keep on rockin'

Mr. Robinson,
Rufus & Chaka Khan was perhaps the group that most influenced me growing up with music. I've followed you ever since they picked you up. I stood up and really first took notice of your skills on tunes like "Heavenbound", "What am I Missing" and "Any Love". My, haven't you made the most of that opportunity! Just wanted to say hello, great site and that I wish you continued success in all that you do.

Hi John!
I want to say hello from Germany. You don't know me, but I had the pleasure last year to perform
the Michael Kleitman-recordings several times (one performance at Olympic Opening party in Athen), that you did last year in the Ocean Way Studios. The whole band did playback, so I had
to write down every note you played on this record, which made me great fun. I was sitting hours
and hours on your fills, and after transcribing two pages of many notes, I realized that is simply awsome what you played, cause every fill is different, but the energy level rises with every little
note you played. In Germany we say "mega-geil"! I did some recordings in Jürgen's Studio near Frankfurt, the guy who made the DVD of your recording and I hope to visit you in L.A., if I get the possibility to come there with Jürgen Blätz and these guys next time.
Thanks,
David Anlauff

John,
I just learned about your web-site last night. I spent this morning going through it. Great site!! On
the 3 hr drive home I thought about us. I have great memories of the "early gigs"!! The Jr. High
Jazz band trips where you got standing ovations for your solos. Riding our bikes to Gibson's and finding Grand Funk's "On Time" and learning "Are you Ready". There are so many more memories that I won't put them all here. I have followed your career through your parent's and Jeff L. but
this site is great! I know I can say that as a friend and anyone that played with you during the "early gigs", we are ALL prowd of you and wish you continued success in whatever you do. Just remember what Helen would say, "Put a sax solo in there someplace" |
